Manchester Christmas Markets.
With X’mas only a few weeks away, it’s that time of the year again where I need my annual fix of Gluhwein, Bratwurst and all things Christmas Market-y. And if there is one city in the UK that knows how to put on a proper Christmas Market, it’s Manchester. The prop-up stalls here span entire city blocks from Albert Square all the way up to the Arndale and Market Street… Gluhwein, Bratwursts and Arts & Crafts aplenty with locals out in full force to enjoy the seasonal festivities. We had a stonkingly good time when we went up a couple of years ago in 2008, and with train fares from London at a mere £25 return, it seemed the ideal weekend getaway to get warmed up for the festive period ahead. Here’s some of the sights and tastes from a lovely Mancunian weekend…
Fully loaded Bratwurst from the Bavarian Grill.
Goulash with Sauteed potatoes and hot mulled Gluhwein. Dee-licious.
My first (and probably last) Curry-wurst. I’m not sure sausage and curry were ever meant for each other.
Sauteed potatoes and Provencale favourites
Every flavour of Chocolate imaginable from Amaretti to Strawberry (to Curry!?)
Oh how I’m already looking forward to the holiday season and compulsory over-indulging that is yet to come.

That goulash looks insanely good! Alas, no trip to Manchester planned for me anytime soon…
Su-Lin: Was properly loaded with pepper and paprika and very satisfying indeed (much better than the Curry Wurst =P ). Worth the trip up if you’ve never had the chance to go up there during Xmas.
I had currywurst in Germany, and agree that it is definitely the worstwurst.
Ram, tell me about it. Was the curry sauce you had in Germany a bit like a watery Katsu curry mixed with Ketchup as well? As you can see, we tried to dress ours up with gherkins and fried shallots from the frankfurter stand, but it was unsaveable…
Oooh that goulash looks insanely good for the cold spell we’ve been having. I wonder if they’ll be serving that at the markets in Hyde Park/South Bank? Hmmm.
Su-Yin: haven’t had the chance to visit Hyde Park/South Bank markets this year yet but if they were what I remember from the time i went three or 4 years ago, didn’t find anything half as good there =(. Happy Birthday btw!
